Climbing Wall
Climbing is inherently dangerous; to minimize the risk of injury, all participants must follow climbing wall team member instructions and adhere to the following policies. Policy violations may result in the loss of climbing privileges in addition to disciplinary action.
- The climbing wall is open to all individuals with a valid membership.
- All participants must complete a Climbing Wall Acknowledgement of Risk and Policies form in order to climb or belay.
- All participants must check in with a climbing wall team member upon arrival and present your valid student ID or membership card.
- Climbing shoes are required while climbing.
- Shoes must be worn at all times in the climbing wall area. Helmets must be worn by all climbers.
- All climbing above shoulder height must be protected by a belay.
- Anchored belays are required.
- Climbing wall team members are not permitted to belay climbers during open climbing hours except during Staff Belay events. They are there to monitor climbers, issue equipment, perform safety skills assessments, and assist patrons.
- The use of cell phones or any mobile technology while climbing or belaying is not permitted.
- Bouldering is not permitted at this time.
- Report unsafe conditions to climbing wall team members immediately.
- All participants must pass a Safety Skills Assessment to belay. Please view the belay study guide for more information or register for one of our belay clinics.
Equipment
- All equipment, including ropes, harnesses, helmets, belay devices, anchors, shoes and eco balls are available for check-out and use at the climbing wall free of charge.
- Climbers assume all liability resulting from the use of personal equipment when climbing.
- Personal ropes are not permitted.
- Chalk is not permitted; eco balls may be used at the climbing wall.
Boxing Area
- Boxing gloves, MMA gloves or wraps are required when using the heavy bag.
- Wraps or gloves are recommended when using the speed bag
- No grappling or wrestling permitted.
- No martial arts weaponry permitted.
- No jumping strikes or kicks.
- Attire policy is enforced including the use of closed-toe athletic shoes.
Group Fitness Studios
The use of Group Fitness studios are limited to scheduled activities.
- For safety reasons, group fitness classes will be limited based on space and availability of equipment.
- Arrive at least 5 minutes prior to the start of class to check in.
- It is important to be on time. The warm up is important to avoid injuries.
- Redbird Card or membership card is required at check-in for the class.
- Please follow the instructor’s routine and keep conversation to a minimum for your safety and the safety of others.
- For safety reasons, participants are not allowed to enter a class once the class has started. Please refrain from entering the classroom before the current class has finished.
- Comfortable, layered clothing is appropriate for all group fitness classes. Supportive athletic closed-toe shoes must be worn in classes. Yoga and Pilates are an exception.
- Return equipment to the proper storage area when class is finished.
- Personal belongings must be kept in a locker or cubby where available.
- Separate closed-toe shoes are recommended for classes. Street shoes can damage the hardwood floors.
- Water must be in an enclosed, unbreakable container. Food, chewing gum and drinks are prohibited.
- Cell phones must be turned off before entering the studio.
- Schedule is subject to change based on attendance.
Cycle Studio
- Cycle classes are limited to 20 participants and are first-come, first served.
- Arrive at least 5 minutes prior to the start of class. Redbird Card or membership card is required at check-in for the class.
- Those new to Campus Recreation cycling classes should arrive 15 minutes early for proper setup and adjustments to the cycle
- Please bring a water bottle and towel to each cycle class.
- Water must be in an enclosed, unbreakable container. Food, chewing gum and drinks are prohibited.
- Work out at an intensity that is comfortable for your fitness level. Please work towards your own personal goals.
- Wear clothing that enhances cooling, prevents skin abrasion, and minimizes friction along the inner thighs. Padded bike shorts or tights are most comfortable. Close fitting clothing is the safest.
- Ensure that your shoes are secure and snug in the toe clips and straps.
- Please wipe down both your cycle and surrounding floor area after your ride. Disinfectant and towels are available for your use.
- Cell phones must be turned off before entering the studio.
- Schedule is subject to change based on attendance
First and Second Level Fitness Floors
- Participants must be 18 years of age or older to use any strength or cardio equipment on the Fitness Floor.
- Cardiovascular machine use is limited to 30 minutes. Please be respectful of others and abide by the time limit when the facility is busy.
- Equipment of any type must be wiped down after each use.
- All equipment must be used in the manner for which it is designed. Standing on weight benches, hanging upside down from equipment, using hand held weights with cardiovascular equipment, walking/running backwards or sideways on treadmills, and having more than one person using a machine are prohibited.
- Individuals are responsible for checking equipment prior to each use. Broken or damaged equipment and/or equipment malfunctions should be reported to the SFC team immediately.
- All cardiovascular and strength equipment must remain where placed in the room and should not be moved or relocated. All free weight equipment must remain in the free weight area and not moved to other levels of the facility.
- Weights must be lifted in a controlled manner. Intentionally slamming or dropping weights is prohibited. Olympic lifts are prohibited (i.e. clean and jerk, snatch).
- All dumbbells, weights, and weight plates must be re-racked after use.
- Spotters are strongly recommended while using free weights.
- Collars must be used with all bars in the free weight area.
- The use of excessive weight is discouraged.
- The use of chalk is prohibited and will be strictly enforced.
- Personal training other than that which is scheduled through Campus Recreation is prohibited.
- Appropriate exercise attire such as T-shirts; soft-soled, non-marking, closed-toe athletic shoes, and athletic pants/shorts is required at all times. Sandals, bare feet, five-fingered shoes, steel-toed boots, and jeans are not permitted.
- Personal belongings must be kept in a locker or cubby where available. Bags are not permitted in the workout areas.
- Report all injuries to Student Fitness Center team members immediately.
- Water must be in an enclosed, unbreakable container. Food, chewing gum and drinks other than water are prohibited.
- Participants may use mobile technology for access to music or phone, however, if disruptive behavior (talking loudly) is noticed or reported, the member will be asked to refrain from use of the device. The use of mobile technology at any time for photo or video purposes is strictly prohibited unless approved in advance. Violators of the above policy may be asked to leave the premises and may face further disciplinary actions.
- Spitting is prohibited.
- Throwing or dropping items from one level to another is prohibited. This will be strictly enforced.
Track
- Run or walk in the direction indicated by the arrow. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday are clockwise days. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are counterclockwise.
- Inside lane is for walking while the outside lane is for running. The center lane can be used for both.
- Be alert for runners as you enter or cross the track surface.
- Walking and running side by side is permitted only when the track is not busy.
- Practice courtesy to others on the track by staying in your lane and giving the right of way to faster runners.
- Racing is not permitted.
- Non-marking, spike-free shoes are required.
- Stretching areas are located in various areas around the track-walls. Railings or heating/AC vents around the track are NOT to be used as stretching aids.
- Track is 1/8 mile. 8 laps equals 1 mile.
- Store personal items in lockers available throughout the facility.
- Throwing or dropping items from one level to another is prohibited. This will be strictly enforced.
- Spitting is prohibited.
- No free weights or fitness equipment permitted on the track.
Equipment Checkout
- A Redbird Card or membership is required to check out equipment.
- Equipment must be returned by the same person who checked out the equipment.
- Redbird Card is required to return equipment.
- Equipment must be returned at least 15 minutes prior to closing time.
- Individuals will be charged a fee for damage or loss of equipment. Fee will be determined based on replacement value for the item.
- Guests are not permitted to check out equipment. Sponsors may check out equipment for their guests, but assume full responsibility for equipment issued.
- Equipment may not leave the building and must be returned prior to leaving the SFC.
- The loss or damage of equipment is the responsibility of the guest. A replacement fee must be paid prior to being allowed to use the SFC again.
Swimming Pool
- Admission to the pool may be denied for any of the following reasons:
- When an individual is apparently unable to care for his or herself
- Intoxication
- Evidence of contagious disease
- Open sores, wounds
- Excessively revealing swimsuits
- Any condition or evidence, which, in the opinion of the staff, will jeopardize the health and safety of the general public
- During your pool time, the following activities are not permitted:
- Abusive or profane language
- Hanging or tugging on lane lines.
- Engaging in personal conduct that jeopardizes the safety of self and others including running and rough play.
- Diving and jumping into the pool
- Consuming food or drink (other than water) or chewing gum
- Carrying or using glass bottles/containers
- Spitting, spouting of water, blowing the nose or otherwise introducing contaminants into the pool
- Swimming alone and/or swimming without a lifeguard on duty.
- Dunking on basketball rims and/or pulling on volleyball net.
- Showers are required of all patrons who work out prior to using the pool. The lifeguard team has the authorization to request anyone to take a shower before entering the pool.
- Life jackets may be used if they are U.S. Coast Guard approved.
- No animals (with the exception of service animals) will be allowed in the pool area.
- Proper swim attire must be worn at all times in the pool.
- Blue jeans, undergarments or any other makeshift swimsuits are not permitted in the water. A clean t-shirt may be worn.
- All state bathing codes apply to this facility.
- The lifeguard team may eject persons from the pool area at any time for cause. Failure to follow lifeguard instructions will result in immediate removal from the area.
Sport Courts
- Since all games are self-officiated and self-monitored, good sportsmanship and proper conduct are expected at all times.
- Black-soled shoes and other marking shoes are not permitted on the playing floor.
- Some scheduled activities on the courts may take priority of open recreation. Any changes in the schedule will be posted at www.CampusRecreation.IllinoisState.edu.
- Grabbing or hanging on the nets or rim is prohibited. The “no dunking” rule is strictly enforced. Violators will be suspended from the facility for at least the remainder of the day and may be directed to meet with SFC management.
- Baseball, football, Frisbee, and other activities deemed unsafe in the court environment are prohibited unless special permission is obtained from the facility manager.
- Throwing objects, including balls, against the walls, bleachers and lights is not allowed.
- Student Fitness Center Facility Manager reserves the right to modify games based on participant needs.
- Appropriate exercise attire such as t-shirts; soft-soled, non-marking, closed-toe athletic shoes, and athletic pants/shorts is required at all times. Sandals, bare feet, five-finger toe shoes, steel-toed boots and jeans are not permitted.
- Personal belongings must be kept in a locker or cubby where they are available.
- Water must be in an enclosed, unbreakable container. Food, chewing gum and drinks other than water are prohibited in the court areas.
Open Recreation and Challenge Courts
During open recreation hours, all basketball courts at the Student Fitness Center are on the challenge court system. In the challenge court system, the losing team must vacate the court to be replaced by the challenging team. To challenge, a waiting individual must write their name on the white board located by each court so the team playing knows that a challenge has been made.. That person must remain courtside and be ready to play when the ongoing game ends. The person challenging determines the make-up of his/her team. Efforts must be made to include other individuals not currently playing in a game; but should additional players be needed to constitute a team, the person offering the challenge may select players from the losing team. A person playing in a game may not challenge until the game in which they are playing ends. The winning team may stay on the court for no more than two consecutive games.
Challenge Court Game Rules
- Basketball games are to be played to 15 baskets, win by 2 baskets. Games cannot be won on a three-point shot.
- Volleyball games are played to 15 points using rally scoring.
- Soccer games are played for 20 minutes. The team with the most points after 20 minutes is the winner.
- Badminton games are played to 11 points.
Multipurpose Court
- Multipurpose court with dasher boards is primarily used for soccer and floor hockey.
- Net preference: Badminton, soccer, floor hockey, and volleyball will have priority over other unscheduled activities on the multipurpose court C on some days. Please refer to the posted schedule for specific information on informal recreation activity times. Starting April 2, 2012, the priority schedule for the MAC court during normal hours is as follows.
- Monday-Thursday, 7-11:30pm: Intramurals
- Friday, 5-8pm: Open Badminton
- Black-soled shoes and other marking shoes are not permitted on the playing floor.
- Body checking is prohibited.
- Climbing/jumping on or over dasher boards is prohibited.
- Rollerblades are not permitted.
- Outdoor soccer balls are not permitted. Indoor soccer balls are available at the equipment checkout desk located at the Welcome Center.
- Black pucks and wooden sticks are not permitted.
